The sacred Hindu town of Badrinath, located among lofty snow capped Himalayan peaks has got several other places of interest to a pilgrim in its vicinity. Joshimath is a well known hill station which is an attraction for people desirous of escaping the scathing summer heat of the great north Indian plains. An easily covered distance of 6 km separates it from Auli. Auli is in itself famous for being a centre of winter sports where people can indulge in skiing etc. Apart from being a tourist attraction, Joshimath is also considered to be a place of pilgrimage because it is believed to be the winter seat of the Lord Badrinath.

Located at a distance of 23 km from Gopeshwar, the great temple of Rudranath was built in the 8th century A.D. As the name itself suggests the temple is dedicated to the Lord Rudra, which is another form in which the Lord Shiva is worshiped.

Gorakhnath Temple

The temple of Gorakhnath is devoted to an honorable Guru of the same name. It is a very ancient centre of pilgrimage in this area.

Chandika Temple

This temple situated on top of rock, 500meter of Bageshwar temple. Amongst the many beliefs in the Hindu religion is the exceptional devotion and reverence to the mother Goddess. Shri Haru Temple

The main shrine is located at an easily covered distance of a mere 5 km from the holy town of Bageshwar located in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand. A large fair is held here on every year Vijaya Dashami.

This temple is situated in the middle of the Bageshwar town which is named after the temple. The holy temple is dedicated to the Lord Shiva of the holy Hindu trinity. There is a very old story related to the temple. As per this tale of mythology a great saint by the name of Markandey stayed here and the Lord Shiva visited the sacred place after taking the form of a tiger to camouflage his true identity.

Gauri Udiyar
